Sherlock: Declarations of Mutual Devotion by waketosleep

Fandom: Sherlock (BBC)
Pairings/Characters: Sherlock/John
Rating: Teen
Length: 2007 words + companion stories
Creator Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] waketosleep
Theme: Marriage of convenience

Summary:

"We should really get married."

John stared at the red mark on his wrist. "I'm sorry, what?"

Reccer's Notes: I almost never revisit this fandom, but when I recced waketosleep's Trek story for this theme, it came to my attention that w2s was a little obsessed with marriages of convenience and had a fantastic and charming gem of a fic where Sherlock co-opts John's life (again), and John (again) doesn't mind at all.

I don't know if I've ever seen hospital access as a reason for a marriage of convenience, but I am here for it! It's practical and a little grim, typical of Sherlock. The interactions between Sherlock and John are spot on and hilarious. In 2000 words, we also get Mrs Hudson, Lestrade, and Mycroft, all contributing to the comedy gold in their understated way.

This story belongs to two different series. The Intellectual Intercourse series is the easiest way to navigate everything if you want to read beyond this fic.

Creative Jam

Welcome to the 145th Crowdfunding Creative Jam! This session will run Saturday, August 16-Sunday, August 17. The theme is "Inner vs. Outer Strength."

Crowdfunding Creative Jam

Everyone is eligible to post prompts, which may be words or phrases, titles, images, etc. Prompters may request a specific creator, but everyone else may still use that prompt if they wish. Prompts may specify a particular character/world/etc. but creators may use the prompt for something else anyway and post the results. Prompters are still encouraged to post mostly prompts that anyone could use anywhere, as this maximizes the chance of having creators make something based on your prompt. Please title your comment "Prompt" or "Prompts" when providing inspiration so these are easy to find.

Prompt responses may also be treated as prompts and used for further inspiration. For example, a prompt may lead to a sketch which leads to a story, and so on. This kind of cascading inspiration is one of the most fun things about a collective jam session.

Everyone is eligible to use prompts, and everyone who wants to use a given prompt may do so, for maximum flexibility of creator choice in inspiration. You do not have to post a "Claim" reply when you decide to use a prompt, but this does help indicate what is going on so that other prompters can spread out their choice of prompts if they wish.

Creators are encouraged, but not required, to post at least one item free. Likewise, sharing a private copy of material with the prompter is encouraged but not required. Creative material resulting from prompts should be indicated in a reply to the prompt, with a link to the full content elsewhere on the creator's site (if desired); a brief excerpt and/or description of the material may be included in the reply (if desired). It helps to title your comment "Prompt Filled" or something like that so these are easy to identify. There is no time limit on responding to prompts. However, creators are encouraged to post replies sooner rather than later, as the attention of prompters will be highest during and shortly after the session.

Some items created from prompts may become available for sponsorship. Some creators may offer perks for donations, linkbacks, or other activity relating to this project. Check creator comments and links for their respective offerings.

Prompters, creators, and bystanders are expected to behave in a responsible and civil manner. If the moderators have to drag someone out of the sandbox for improper behavior, we will not be amused. Please respect other people's territory and intellectual property rights, and only play with someone else's characters/setting/etc. if you have permission. (Fanfic/fanart freebies are okay.) If you want to invite folks to play with something of yours, title the comment something like "Open Playground" so it's easy to spot. This can be a good way to attract new people to a shared world or open-source project, or just have some good non-canon fun.

Boost the signal! The more people who participate, the more fun this will be. Hopefully we'll see activity from a lot of folks who regularly mention their projects in this community, but new people are always welcome. You can link to this session post or to individual items created from prompts, whatever you think is awesome enough to recommend to your friends.

Silent Darrow linkdump

March 2025:

Not too many decades ago, he would have let her fend for herself. He might not even have done this much, unwilling to interfere and stick his neck out for strangers. He can't do that anymore. She's so young and so scared, and she needs help, so he'll help. Hopefully she's good at keeping secrets. He's cultivated a reputation for frivolity, and killing monsters doesn't really go well with that.

Shion and Mouse have a less than pleasant first encounter.

"At least there's someone here who makes for good company," she huffs, half-teasing. Maybe she should be more worried about these things, but she's faced worse, and Willow trained her well. She interrupts herself to utter a spell, green light shooting out of the tip of her wand and very satisfyingly into one of the creatures' faces, before she spares a glance at Shion and continues. "This might be a good time to get inside."

Down in Silent Darrow, Shion finds Elora, and Elora finds out what he is.

SGA: Always Crashing in the Same Car by WonkyElk

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Patrick Sheppard, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan
Rating: M
Length: 11,758
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply
Creator Links: WonkyElk on AO3, cookiemom6067 on AO3, cookiemom6067 on the Audiofic Archive
Themes: Marriage of Convenience, First time, Hurt/comfort, Complete AU

Summary: “Damn it, John, you’re thirty-six, and you’ve never had a stable relationship.”

Patrick Sheppard adjusted his tie and gave him that familiar look, that 'I’m trying to love you, son, but you just keep on disappointing me’ expression, which had started somewhere around John’s eleventh or twelfth birthday - just as soon as he got an ounce of healthy rebellion - and had rarely left his dad’s face since.

Reccer's Notes: Ronon plays matchmaker in this marriage of convenience, recommending Rodney to John, who's undertaking the marriage mostly to piss off his father, but also to strengthen his place in the company hierarchy. Rodney seems the perfect spouse to annoy Patrick Sheppard, being brash, and, most importantly, male. But then it turns out they get on remarkably well, and eventually Rodney encourages John to be himself, not continue to try to please his (impossible to please) father. There's angst, character development, romance, and some action/adventure, until they work it out. An excellent read!

spoilers for the very end of kpdh ) As she steps out of the alley, the world does a strange little spin around her. Lines blur, colors desaturate and then brighten again. The alley she’s standing in front of isn’t the alley she’d left in Seoul.

“What?” she breathes. She frowns, looking around, turning in a tense circle.

“Rumi?” she calls, looking back down the alley. Rumi’s standout purple hair and Zoey’s bright yellow hoodie are nowhere to be seen. “Zoey?” she calls, louder. She steps into the alley, but instead of taking her back to the bathhouse, it leads to the backside of a—

“...Pizzeria?” she reads slowly, narrowing her eyes suspiciously. It takes a heartbeat longer to realize that she’s reading the word in English, not hangul, and Mira blinks in alarm. “What the f— what the fuck?”

Darting back out of the alley, Mira skids to a stop and takes in the rest of the street she’s on. Without realizing it, her body has gotten ready to fight, muscles bunched and hand poised to summon her glaive from the honmoon. Everything is different. There’s no corn dog vendor, no paver stones, no bank or anything else that’s supposed to be on the street at the end of the alley they’d taken.

Because this isn’t that street. Somehow, she’s in a different neighborhood. And judging by all the English signs everywhere, she’s probably in a completely different country.

The how is what scares her more. With the honmoon in place, this can’t be some trick by Gwi-ma, can it? But what else could it be? She’s been transported to an entirely different place, her girls are nowhere to be seen.

Mira fumbles her phone out of her pocket and slides it unlocked. The top right corner shows no signal for long enough that her palms start to sweat, but then it blinks and four bars fill in. She quickly finds her group chat with Rumi and Zoey.

where r u guys

She hits send and watches the message think about it before a red exclamation mark appears beside it. With a growl, Mira shakes her phone and tries again.

hello??
zoey RUMI ZOEY!!!
THIS ISN’T FUNNY

Each message is met with a red exclamation mark signaling that the messages are undeliverable. She growls harder, and clutches her phone tight so she doesn’t just chuck it. She looks around again, but this time she tries to take in the people around her, instead of the surroundings themselves.

They’re just people. Friends hanging out, people walking to or from work, sitting at bus stops and little tables outside little cafes. Mira’s frowning as she takes it in, hand still tightly clamped around her phone.

“Where… am I?” she asks.

[ NEW PUP!! Find Mira anywhere that's convenient for your pup, at any time that's convenient for your pup. This is a semi-traditional debut, so the first person can explain what's going on and then everyone else can find her walking around with her packet, looking frustrated and lost XD please come say hi!!! ]

Smallville: Red Tape by Lenore

Fandom: Smallville
Pairings/Characters: Clark/Lex
Rating: Explicit
Length: 16,262
Creator Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] lenore
Theme: Marriage of convenience

Summary: Clark’s illegal, and Lex makes him a green card proposal.

Reccer's Notes: Here with another Smallville rec! This time, it's Clark who, ostensibly, needs to get married because he has no social security number, no legit adoption papers. Lex is the mayor of Metropolis in this story, and Clark is a reporter at the Daily Planet. Lex knows the secret of Clark's/Superman's identity, and he doesn't want to be the bad guy who has to deport a beloved superhero. Solution: marriage!

What I love about this story is how absolutely befuddled Clark is by Lex's proposal and the actuality of the marriage. It's SO CLARK. Lenore touches on another of my favorite Clark traits, which is his loneliness and his inability to sustain a relationship because of his secret. I don't recall the story explicitly stating Clark's age, but I think he's in his late twenties, maybe almost thirty. Those added years give more emotional weight to the (of course) eventual romance and falling in love.

Lois and the Kents feature in the narrative, and it never fails to delight me when Lois makes coffee or Mr. Kent talks farming with Lex.

Fanwork Links: Red Tape. This story was originally posted on LJ/Smallville Slash Archive and later moved to AO3, which resulted in a duplication. I was told by the author that this is the correct version.

[admin post] Admin Post: New Challenge: Kids These Days

Kids These Days, SWG challenge, 15 August through 15 September

If there is a unifier among generations, it is complaining about the kids and teens in the generations coming up behind them. There was likely an ancient Mesopotamian complaining about the brainrot effects of that newfangled cuneiform and kids carving their names on the ziggurat walls. Likewise, there is no reason to believe our beloved Tolkien characters were immune to these timeless worries and whinges about the young people around them (or experienced the ever-helpful "advice" of their elders when they were themselves whippersnappers).

This month's challenge will offer a bingo card chock-full of perennial complaints about kids and teens. Choose one or several prompts to include in your fanwork. Numbers will not be called; you can select any prompt you want at any time. Your fanwork does not have to be about kids and teens; as always, we welcome creative interpretations of our prompts.

There are special stamps available for completing rows, columns, diagonals, or (if you are old enough to withstand the effort of going uphill both ways) a full card blackout where you manage every prompt. Note that, to complete rows and blackouts, you do not need to use all of the prompts in a single fanwork but can use them across multiple fanworks. Let the moderators know if you need one of the special stamps.

You can find the bingo card and text prompts for the Kids These Days challenge here.

Thank you to hĂŽn_isil for this month's adorable stamps!

In order to receive a stamp for your fanwork, your response must be posted to the archive on or before 15 September 2025. For complete challenge guidelines, see the Challenges page on our website.

Tag into this post with characters you're thinking of apping to the game (characters who are not currently in-game or currently reserved by someone else). It can be just a tag, a brief EP, whatever you want. You can be new to the game, or simply want to test out a fresh pup. Tag each other with these characters or those already in game, and have fun.

[admin post] Admin Post: Prompts Needed for September's Jumble Sale Challenge!

Jumble Sale, SWG challenge, 15 September through 15 October, banner shows a jumble sale flier amid a jumble of past challenge banners

Have you ever noticed one of our challenges or prompts that would be absolutely perfect … for someone else to write? Or maybe the perfect storm of challenge and prompt combos that would be entirely delicious, intriguing, perplexing, or evil? For our September challenge, Jumble Sale, you will have your chance to offer up past challenges and prompts to other creators to work their magic!

How It Will Work

You can offer up to five items "for sale" at the jumble sale! Items should consist of a past SWG challenge or a prompt for a challenge. You can combine challenges and prompts, but all challenges and prompts should come from the SWG collection. You can find the full list of challenges here. Items will be listed as the prompts in the Jumble Sale challenge for other creators to make fanworks for.

How many challenges/prompts can you include in your item? As many as you want! Be tame, go wild, the choice is yours!

Next, you can set an optional "price" on your items. These are extra conditions that the creator must fulfill in claiming your item. Remember that the SWG is a positive-focused space; make sure your price is what you want to see, not what you want to avoid.

Some examples:

Ready to put some items in our Jumble Sale? Use the form here to send us your items!

summer comes yelling, loud as hope

Dated mid-June, 2025:

All sorts of ingredients for cakes and cupcakes and cookies are in front of her now, a couple recently-acquired recipe books propped up as well. Lately, she's been experimenting with concepts she never heard of before Darrow. There seems to be a big market for baked goods that are vegan, gluten free, sugar free, or some combination of those, and she's practiced enough to feel confident while also still wanting to have the recipes as guidelines. If Pride is about people being able to love who they love, there should be no dietary restrictions on that, either.

And, on one stretch of counter, she has icing ingredients and mixtures in progress, an assortment of organic food coloring, and her phone screen pulled up to a page listing different flags associated with different sexual orientations. In the end, there will be cakes decorated to correspond to them.

Elora borrows Shion's kitchen to do some baking for Pride, and hangs out with him and Sophie.

Rating: Teen and up
Length: 21K words
Creator Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] ratherunnecessary
Theme: Marriage of Convenience, Alternative Professions

Summary:
Choi Soobin: Korea’s hottest leading man—who’s secretly nursing a broken heart.

Kang Taehyun: heir to the legendary Kang Entertainment—but only if he gets married first.

Reccer's Notes: I love Soobin in this - he goes from broken-hearted to agreeing to help an acquaintance (by marrying him, of course) to a devoted husband. He comes into his own as a partner over the course of this, and is more solid in himself at the end, too.

The other characters are also great. Yeonjun, in particular, just shines.
