The day has finally come...

...I'm older than the Eleventh Doctor.

*silently weeps*

ETA:

Steve Moffat, who is succeeding Russell T Davies as lead writer on the show, said he had originally been looking for a mature replacement for Tennant.
'One thing I was very emphatic about was I thought there were too many people young on the list,' he revealed. 'I said "I think we're looking for someone in their 40s, or 30s". And of course we ended up casting a 26-year-old.'
He said that the moment he auditioned Smith he knew he had found the next Doctor.
'He was just spot on from the beginning... I couldn't believe it.'

And he was complimentary about Smith's potential: 'There is something quite old about him, so he looks old and young at the same time, which is terribly important.'

Sounds great. Eventually, I will get over being older than the Doctor. Eventually...

Oh, god, and I am only JUST younger than him. Ugh. And I would have been totally on board if they'd picked the guy who played the Marquis in Neverwhere, because that dude was awesome.

I have no idea what he's capable of as an actor, so I'll be there to see what he can do in 2010. Still, I'm trying not to think about whether it was inevitable that they'll cast younger actors to keep the fangirls happy or not.

My second thought was: 'what about River's comment about 10 being 'so young!' o_O

True; I haven't seen him in anything and we have no idea what the Doctor/companion dynamic will be like under Moffat (I am definitely encouraged that he always seemed to love throwing a wrench into the Doctor/Rose machine, but if he winds up turning the Doctor into a Space Pimp I don't know if I'll be any happier :P).

I had figured that River never interacted with any Doctor but 10, and that the "you look younger than I've ever seen you" comment was a reflection of the fact that her 10 had already lost Donna and presumably gone though enough other badness to make him appear older. So if we get a return of River (and we really, really should), it'll be shortly before the regeneration.

*chokes* Space Pimp! Platy, you really have a way of making me sporfle.

Ah, see, somehow I always assumed that she'd seen several future!Doctors before. Ah well, I guess we'll find out where they go with it before long. I will try to trust Moffat. At least he's not prone to throwing cheap plot devices around- or covering a thin plot with a pile of special effects.

To be honest, I wanted Sassybaskets. *sighs*

He looks so...emo.

10 was extremely emo, although he looked fun and geeky. I'm hoping that 11 turns out to be sombre if he does end up a darker figure.

Aaaw. I know that feeling. :(

[identity profile] philosophercat.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
When did the time come for you?

Pretty much whenever I hear about a professional non-child actor who's younger than me, really. And I still haven't gotten over being older than Jane Eyre. *g*

[identity profile] philosophercat.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see. In this case, it's disturbing because the Doctor was this 30-40 year old man when I was 6 and now I'm turning 27 in two weeks and he's 26. >_

Ah, so maybe it's a different feeling. *g*

A related one, I think. I'm so old now, people younger than me are being cast in tv shows I watched when I was a kid. Oh noes! >_< I never think of myself as old at all, since 26 is nothing at all.

You know...I don't know if I should be ashamed to admit this or not, but I am finding the guy really rather attractive.

[identity profile] philosophercat.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
He grows on one. ;) The interview has given me more to think about. He does sound like he has a good grip on things. I have upgraded myself from neutral (albeit freaked out to be older than the Doctor) to hesitantly optimistic (and glad to know that he's also freaked out that he's the Doctor lol).

[identity profile] ladyofithilien.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I still have not figured out why I find him attractive for he is an odd looking fellow. He just has this very intriguing face. I have never seen anyone who has looked like him before, of which is a good thing in my opinion. Especially if one is playing the Doctor.

I liked his interview too. He does seem to have a good grip on things. I am holding out in hope that he may just impress us all.

[identity profile] avalonauggie.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Granted, I haven't seen the interview and I'm just going by that photo, but

HOLY GOD HE IS TERRIFYING

and I wonder if he has been attacked by vampire aliens that sucked all the pigment out of his skin and TOOK HIS EYEBROWS.

he scares me. he scares me a lot. It's like....like they look all of Eccles' lanky weirdness and genetically mixed it with Edward from Twilight.

Okay I'm gonna have nightmares tonight.

Still, unpretty is better than nothing, I suppose. Unless this so-pale-he-looks-like-he-was-found-floating-in-a-river look is what's getting the teen girls hot these days.

[identity profile] avalonauggie.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
okay, now I have seen the interview, and I will append my statements:

His head is like if you took Ron Howard's terrifying brow/forehead and stuck AL PACINO'S HAIR on it. He seems enthusiastic about the role, which is good. I am a little less afraid of him now. But for the love of god, someone has to do something about his hair.

[identity profile] philosophercat.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
LOL I love you, Auggie. ^_^

So long as they don't give him an 8th Doctor Romantic poet!wig, right?

I am also with you on the 'unpretty' bit. I had hoped in my heart of hearts for an older and un-sexy Doctor so we can get back to the fun and the adventure without having all of the romantic side plots and angst.

As for paleness/lack of eyebrows: lighting in both the picture and the interview was horrid. And also THE Peter Davison likewise has invisible eyebrows and he's awesome. Maybe invisible eyebrows is a sign of genius?

[identity profile] philosophercat.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I had noticed vaguely that there was something Edward-like about how they've made him up in the photo. I heard that the teen fangirls wailed and went into mourning for the hair of the actor who played Edward in the film when he had it chopped. Someone should write a poem about it becoming a constellation, like in Rape of the Lock...
