I can has pierogi?
Feb. 3rd, 2008 08:39 pmI made my first pierogi today! ^_^ They're... rather large. But it's alright. More fun that way! More tasty! I have pictures but I am really too lazy to bother getting them resized and uploaded off LJ. I am astonished at how economical, tasty, and filling *real* pierogi are. I grew up eating store bought, mass-produced ones. I usually had three with some butter, salt, maybe a little sauerkraut too. But these? o_O Mom had ONE- almost one. And that was it. I managed to pack away three but I almost didn't make it. It was touch-and-go for awhile, but the tasty helped me through.
These ones are made with a nummy sourcream dough. We cheaped out on the filling: foodbank potatoes that were about to begin their gooey afterlives, and a packet of pop-corn white chedder flavouring. It's sort of blasphemous, I think. But aside from that, it was still alright. The pastry made up for the mediocre filling.
And, you know what is EVEN BETTER than having home made pierogi? Paczki day. PACZKI!!!!!!!!! Oh nom nom nom! And how great is it that the Polish bakery down the street doesn't even pretend that they are just for Mardi Gras? "PACZKI DAY IS ALMOST HERE! PLACE YOUR ORDER TODAY!" ^_^ I should take a picture of the sign. Seriously, everyone in town- or at least this part of town- loves their paczki. They only sell them on Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras before Lent, and only in the Orthodox Christian bakeries. It gets pretty crazy. Blak's Bakery just throws together boxes of random flavours and people buy them even if they don't like the flavours- just to get some. I remember trying to give away the custard ones.
